For Capilla Peak Campground: What an amazing site. Last 4 miles of 9 mile dirt road from village of Monzano to campground can appear intimidating but actually is well maintained. Do need to watch for wider passing areas as overall road is single lane. Looks like it might get 4x4, but easily accessible by normal cars. Road starts from Monzano as paved for a few hundred yards, then short stretch of road that could be very messy if wet or raining. Remainder is good all weather dirt/gravel. Only vehicle access to Ridge section of Monzano Crest Trail. Road provides maintenance access to numerous relay towers and Capilla Peak Observatory (not open to public) and fire tower. Campground has spectacular views to the Estancia Valley to the east. Campground was clean and well maintained with modern pit toilets. Road parallels Monzano Crest Trail on way to campground and also Gavlin Hawk Watch Trail out along a high ridge to the west. Very few visitors for such a great summer heat retreat.
