For South Beach Campground - Padre Island National Seashore: So, this is roughing it camping, generators are a must in the summer month as it’s hot and humid, if you don’t mind this, keeping the windows open is nice I thought. There are no facilities besides some high end porta-potties that for us were six miles, we have a 11,000 lbs fifth wheel we pulled down here and I can’t stress what the other reviewer said enough, there is a happy medium to where you want to park, to far towards the dunes and you may have a bad time, check with the ranger in regard to the tides, you don’t want your R.V. washed into the ocean. I recommend bring 5 gallon buckets to dip your feet and shoes and such so you don’t track all the sand back in. We practice short showers and went through roughly 25 gallons a day between toilets and showers. Overall a wonderful experience waking up having coffee on the beach!!

For South Beach Campground - Padre Island National Seashore: Camped in our motorhome right on the beach for two nights. Very cool to pick where you want to camp and be out on your own. Saw the occasional ranger drive by, but did not experience any overzealous ones as noted by another reviewer. A note of caution: beware of the tides if you decide to drive and camp on the beach. The beach is very flat, and even a +1.0 tide can cause it to become very narrow. Camp too close to the water and the tide may reach your rig. Camp too close to the dunes and you will get stuck in the sand. We experienced both!

For South Beach Campground - Padre Island National Seashore: We always camp here, and have been coming for years. I have to share however that things have changed, and perhaps not for the best. You can camp here in the primitive area and enjoy the gulf as if its your own, however it seems that the park rangers have released a mass group of graduated student rangers. There are more ranger cars and trucks than visitors on the beach. They are constantly pulling over everyone and anyone with light flashing as if you we're in a major metro area. We even saw two young males kneeling in the sand with 5 ranger trucks for about 15 minutes before they allowed the to return to their mission. We were also stopped and asked what we were doing on the beach, we said camping, they said ok, be good. Lol we are in our 60's. bottom line is its a great place, but be on the look out for all those young ranger Barney pifes as they are looking for you. Sitting on the beach and watching them will bring you great humor, it's like watching turkeys chasing grasshoppers.
