For McDowell Campground: There were signs advising to pay but no clear instructions on WHERE to pay. We passed 2 info boards that mentioned how to pay but didn’t have pay tubes or envelopes. We finally asked someone riding by. The camping area feels run down and the electrical post was melted so we didn’t feel comfortable plugging in. There was another site that the electricity didn’t work on and yet there was no sign on it. Old tags on the posts weren’t taken down so I’m guessing the hosts don’t keep up with it. We have Verizon and had no signal. Due to all of this we left.

Papa Bill

For McDowell Campground: This location has four or five camping options. The Lake McClellan location has electric and water hookups. The restrooms were clean. There is a dump station for all the campground. This is ideally located for an overnight stay traveling on I40. Just three miles from the interstate, road noise is not a problem. We stayed on a Wednesday night and there were plenty of sites open. The word from those there and the NF person we talked to on the phone is Sun-Thurs there is usually room. Weekends the place fills up as it access to the large number of ATV trails. We would stop again. Very good for overnight.

For McDowell Campground: Nice isolated CG, easy to get to off of I40. We were one of two campers, coyotes called at night, awesome!

For McDowell Campground: Nice campground convenient to I-40.
Pulled in after dark. We were one of 4 in the park.
Bulletin board signs were in need of replacement & no campground map was available, so we wandered through & found a back-in site on the top level.
Our site had a leaky water pipe, so we didn't use it.
Toilet/shower/sink were all in one large lockable room.
Lots of bugs from the nearby lake, but they were the non-biting kind that were attracted to the light of the camper.
Stickers in the grass, so walk the fur babies on the roads.
Overall, well worth the $15 for the shower & good night's rest along I-40
