For South Monticello - Elephant Butte Lake State Park: Park itself is very quite and clean but everything was locked up with no explanation and the camp host was not in. There was not a ranger to be found which surprised us because the Texas parks they constantly make rounds. We could not stay without a restroom so I called Reserve.gov and explained the situation. We had been told the facilities were open which we verified on line. It seems only some of the NM parks have open facilities. We had reserved 3 nights and a refund was refused. Not happy that we were given false info. We are not staying in anymore NM parks and hope to avoid Reserve.gov when possible.

For South Monticello - Elephant Butte Lake State Park: I came up to this campground because the main campground was full - and glad I did. Even during this busy spring break, there were quite a few sites available. They are all level, gravel, with covered picnic tables and a fire ring. It was super quiet. If you like to hike/walk, there is a nice developed path near the day use area. Check it out, you’ll be glad you did!

For South Monticello - Elephant Butte Lake State Park: We spent 4 nights at Elephant Butte State Park in New Mexico. We spent them in the South Monticello campground. We enjoy desert vistas and sunsets. After touring the rest of the park we decided that South Monticello is the only place to stay. It was good that we were not looking for water-sports as the reservoir is only filled to 6% capacity. We did not see much of the camp hosts. The bathhouses were serviceable although none had shower curtains and the water control is of the “you must continuously push the button” to keep the water flowing. As such, the water is only lukewarm. Additionally, what made this park enjoyable was the hikes that were available. Essentially, they have a 14 mile trail that follows the lake. You can break them up into 3 to 4 miles hikes by just going to different trail heads. We stayed here in a 32 foot motorhome with a TOAD in January of 2019

For South Monticello - Elephant Butte Lake State Park: Beautiful spot and very well maintained. Sites are level and quite far apart. Wonderfully quiet and serene. Awesome showers. We will definitely return. Make sure to go to SOUTH MONTICELLO as the other ones around the lake are not nearly as nice.

For South Monticello - Elephant Butte Lake State Park: Fantastic NM state park campground with big, well-separated spots offering electric and water hookups, plus a 2-station dump. Very peaceful, with gorgeous views of the lake and nearby mesas. Clean, central showers/full toilets, plus a couple of vault toilets.

We drove through the park's other, more developed campgrounds closer to Truth or Consequences, and were glad we chose to stay at South Monticello. We had reserved ahead of time, but didn't see any real difference between the reservations loop and the first-come, first-served sites elsewhere in the campground.

The general store in Elephant Butte sells firewood and other supplies. If you need more options, there's a Walmart in T or C along with groceries and restaurants.
