For Willow Creek - Heron Lake State Park: How could that bad review be for this place? Green treed . Beautiful. Got here after hours and were not happy to see reservations only sign. The state site also All Stays didn’t say that. Luckily we were able to call . But we think you’re losing people who come at dark and don’t bother to call that number. Internet signup at that hour? We had trouble in daylight. We were lucky to get quick service to make a reservation on site. It’s pouring rain so all the side trails are gumbo yet we give it a five. Wanted to check out lake but a muddy dog wasn’t what we needed. Sites are nicely distributed.

For Willow Creek - Heron Lake State Park: Horrible, dirty, dusty, dry campground in the middle of nowhere. Don’t get it. Some good reviews here but I swear they must be talking about another place. I purchased the NM state park pass and regret it. Been to 4 campgrounds and can’t say anything good about any of them. State takes your money but does not reinvest. Surprise, surprise.

For Willow Creek - Heron Lake State Park: This seems like a very nice park but I only give it three stars for the following reasons.
Their website states that it is open all year.
Only part of it is open right now.
The washrooms are shut down in September, I can only assume the showers are too.
The nearest pit toilet is a little over a half of a mile from where I’m parked.
Now my experience may be blamed somewhat on the fact that there is a lot of snow right now, but the fact that the toilets are closed in September should have been mentioned on their website.
On the plus side, there is electricity and water, the rangers I spoke to were friendly and helpful.
I think this would be a great place for spring summer and fall, but I would not recommend it in winter unless you have a four season camper.
