Local

For Viking Mart: I am a Montgomery resident who for over the last 5 years has often done business with the local Viking Mart Marathon gas station. I always leave there with a negative experience and have finally decided to share my experiences. The first problem encountered on a typical visit is their complete lack of parking and/or direction. You often have to park inconvieniently far away because everyone parks every which way. I have lately began just parking at a gas pump even though I am not buying gas just to have a sure spot for a moment. Next, the employees are exceptionally rude. They have entire loud and rowdy conversations among each other as if there are no customers around whatsoever. That is irritating but can be ignored. However I really despise being checked out. The cashier will often dryly announce your total (occasionally...often they are still deep within their own visits with each other or they are simply too rude to even speak-and this latter happens just as often). Then you pay and that's it, no thank you, no anything. It may not sound like a big deal but I leave there with a sense of their open hatred of perhaps their job and/or perhaps their hatred of you. Who knows. All I wanted was some gas, or a drink, or a snack. The last straw was when I realized I had stopped saying "hi" or "thank you" or anything at all while making my purchase. I started doing this because I realized that they will not return the same polite/normal behavior. But this is not who I am. I do not want to become like them. And afterwards as I am walking to my car I am wondering if I did the right thing because they deserved rudeness or if maybe I should have ignored their lack of social skills and maybe led by an example of what manners were. And after nearly a decade of this, I have found myself avoiding that business at all costs. I have found it is worth it to me to drive further or even pay more somewhere else. I know they have a large Amish clientele but I have realized that they do have a reputation and others who feel the same way.
